Leaping across time
emotional push
and psychological pull

lullabies reduced
by misfortune
and grumbling bluster

while looking as funny
as a redwood trunk
for musclemen
doing the jitterbug

spurning setups
for predecessors
less limited
totally lacking
like half flowers

overlapping
basally attached
rounded backs

out showing each lobe
drained of emotion
getting in on the joke

like cliché-infested hokum
for imaginatively chosen
movie goers

standing out
as showboats
in minimal roles
of affecting moments

known locally
out in the open
over exposed

floppy flight
feet dangling
crucial inland

as somewhat
secretive duckweed
with white mottling

and barred underparts
on brackish marshes
becoming especially fond
of smartweed seeds

hardly distinguishing
between melodious whinnies
and abrasive "keeks"
while breeding in reeds

laughing "wah-wahk"
in the shallows
wings rapidly flapping

laying pinkish buff eggs
multi-octave propagation
culminating in havens
for mavens of Father's Day...
