" Intermingling Haiku Series "

Seeking mates all day
active tropical skippers
adherence to each

inclement weather
with antennae straight ahead
dense vegetation

roosting under leaves
returning night after night
upward spiraling

selecting hilltops
territoriality
relatively rare

cannot chew solids
suctorial proboscis
sugar-rich sippings

basking in full sun
darkening scales under wings
frequent alightings

feeding on sap flows
rotting fruit, bird-droppings, dung
rich in saltpeter

restricted courtship
wings wrapping around small twigs
communal roostings

including zebras
caterpillars creamy white
rows of branched black spines

long-lived passion vines
nectaring at alfalfa
hindwings orange brown

wide varieties
heads and bodies shiny red
fields' open edges

black-edged silver lines
eggs in dried-up violets
leafed out fed by night

forested valleys
underside hindwing blue-green
declining species

pointing inwardly
familiar fritillaries
south of the Rockies

yellow-green on top
coniferous woods and bogs
mottled dark blotches

stops only briefly
imbibing alpine species
wetland willow seeps

off-white basal patch
pale purplish lateral
disturbed habitats

like untitled nudes
solarized in a darkroom
never looking back

large bonbon boxes
remaining self-effacing
in bizarre cases

emaciated
displaced faded draperies
detached from restraints

headdress and breastplate
in a dreamy subconscious
with a riding crop

somewhat sinister
eroticism by chance
ironic graspings

exhaustion, feared loss
maternal isolation
hate and holocaust

undeniable
threatened annihilation
encircling the head

suffused jewelike lights
instilling lightheadedness
dizzying decent

paler than red-necked
especially on the head
russet upper breast

locally common
calling nasal, "wide-a-wake"
not unlike noddies...
