of used to be or could still be
keeping conviction alive
as the most probably alike
long-form improv drawn
on the stomp swerve and whipsaw
of a loosely written life story
neither an "auto" nor a "bio"
side show mock revival
barreling along
across a dance floor
where bands jam
with counter programs
of the before and after
in hard boiled soft shoes
and schematic tap-taps
of pocket-sized commandments
while tacking between
seamy streets and hushed precincts
with a taste for the hunt
becoming slippery and treacherous
by dipping in and out
of the still-in-print unwitting prowess
having been cleverly reissued
with a scholarly heir
hard bound colored by hand...
