Nasty business
caught in the middle
of vaunted pitchmen
targeted by opposition
while losing interest
in the backfield


failing to recreate history
for the sport of kings
slivering promises
wherever they may lead


leaving rangers reeling
unflinchingly
with nondescript
stiff upper lips
having never been licked


facing deficits
staring at exits
with change ups
over the plate
in playoffs


crashing the crease
over two periods
closer to tees
of yo-yo feelings


betwixt and between
slightly smaller niches
barely even while trailing
and blowing kisses
into the stands

as thanks to madly
cheering fans
in sun-drenched handicaps
contingent on status
beneath canopies of fallout


stepping on the gas
waving and clapping when asked
on smaller scales
making good on brash first classes


held captive beneath the basket
tipped off of the rim above scrutiny
of the all too brief happy meals
while slipping off double dribbles


cringing with a balky knee
that doesn't point fingers
as games slip away
sideways unlike untidy remains
of fast breaks haphazardly rotated


sapped by the slightest drag
of teensy-weeny disparities
of elite talent faring badly
under strict salary caps


as the magic runs out
overbid by now
seen as invaluably erratic
luxury taxes meant to oust
tens of thousands
with less ab and more flab
while riding waves of beach hair...
