Never far from mind
flickering in a kind
of half-life for footlights
like teeterers on high wires
as watchful eyes grow wide
amid fighting praying silently
for the shelling to subside
during overtures while choralists
in starched red blazers
warm up back stage
stiffly listening for whistling artillery
as musicians play crisply
on pitch under fire in the pit...
