after giving rise
to an unoccupied
arid environment
facing rigors of life
locomotion
and breathing
problems
never entirely divorced
from preceding species
during breeding seasons
swollen rings
lower bodies
dark mottling
spotting
large flat rocks
emerging larvae
well guarded
heavily blotched
weed-choked ponds
cypress swamps
gill slits
no hind limbs
carnivorous sirens...
