Roots and Shoots

" Roots and Shoots "

Roots and shoots
sending out starbursts
made out of toothpicks

speckled racers and kingsnakes
secretly carving their names
on slightly concave fertile scrapes

laying clutches of leathery eggs
in bush-bur sage terrain
and rocky ranges
of brown-chinned slate

sounding like a rattler
by vibrating its tail
against dead vegetation

violently biting and thrashing
grooved rear fangs
immobilized prey

dark stripes through the eyes
bellies uniformly white
skillful climbers

tipped with sharp spines
on rainy nights eating sirens
feeding on spiders

fast-moving agile
hissing striking
as black headcaps
extend downward
into corners of mouths...
