" Skip Over Magic Potions "
by Suzán Jiván
Mom & Mom-
Mom Suzán
Set aside earlier
selling melons and coffee
petting the dog
gusts pick up dust
lips filmed with gritty scum
from artillery fire thuds
snakes and scorpions
upstaged at the gates
of the ungamily displaced
avoiding sniper fire
doubling in size
taught on television sites
hawking cigarettes
on the main drags
of tents and trailers
graveyards
for ramshackled
camels with schrapnel
in makeshift clinics
turning on spits
hustled off to prison
not nearly as nimbly
dismissive in precarious
positions of dithering indecision
offered up for questioning
snatched up as menial jobs
along porous borders
grotesque
ectoplasmic drones
skip over magic potions...
