Lesson No. 1: doing well
as our smallest herons
with distinctively long necks
that can be extended
yet are usually held coiled
while crouching in dense reeds
singing descendingly
recouping best musical
both choppily and smoothly
like buzzing buntings
perching in dense mesquite
varied plain and drab
higher faster great-tailed
grackles overlapping
habitats postures shared
becoming all too rare...
