" Scared Witless "
by Suzán Jiván, Mom

Scared witless
parked
between cars
like hard
copy
arms and armor
as modern
costumes
in office spaces
for scholars
scrappy
and expansive
beheld
in the lower
right hand
attesting to tension
fingers clenched
like valued lessons
brought together
as snail shells
body and neck
at the center
over the millennia
becoming preoccupied
by equipping the dead
for the afterlife
like carved white
alabaster statues
commandingly
ravishing
tiny, standing
as schematic
stone jackals
with granite falcons
and hippo amulets
worn as protection
for the pregnant
in the fourth millennium
carefully chipped out of flint
with a penchant
for Pharaonic perfection
manifested
in neither lament
nor celebration
midstep...
