" Given Little Weight "
by Suzán Jiván, Mom

Given little weight
in the final tally
connecting way back
to an inadequate charity
suppressed and abstractly
stretched well past
flashy two-point baskets
in dusky timbres and wide palettes
stuck-up puffy fronts of the unlovely
shrouded in chewing gum bubbles
popping with pink sweetness
released by agreeing to a bit o' bubbly
like the would-be stingingly secret
guilded nominees in award seasons
all for good causes lamented as loss
scrawled on chalkboards
in grim predictions facing criticism
like politics written in fine print
while balking at new limits
of bitter possibilities
being split by deficits
as small victims
inside school buildings
filled with fragile
pink and lavender
hand-painted glass...
